About Margaret Dardess

Margaret Dardess has always been fascinated by the past—the people who came before us and the stories that shaped their lives. Born and raised just outside New York City, she has traveled across continents before settling in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with her husband and their long-haired cat, Buffy. A lifelong history enthusiast, Margaret studied the subject in college and graduate school before embarking on a diverse career as an attorney, corporate executive, and university administrator. Now, she brings history to life for young readers through engaging, adventure-filled historical fiction.

Her debut middle-grade novel, Bowers and Shady takes readers on an unforgettable journey into the Reconstruction Era, where a brave Iowa farm boy and a resourceful Irish orphan form an unlikely friendship while navigating the dangers of the post-Civil War frontier. Inspired by a story passed down from her grandmother, Bowers and Shady weaves history, adventure, and the magic of childhood discovery into an enthralling tale. Perfect for early readers, homeschoolers, and anyone who loves middle-grade historical fiction, Margaret’s books offer thrilling stories of courage, friendship, and resilience.

She is currently working on a sequel, where Shady’s fearless determination puts her at odds with powerful figures threatening the land and people of Green Valley. As she uncovers the town’s growing environmental crises, she realizes the only person who might believe her is Bowers—who is hundreds of miles away.

Margaret invites young explorers, parents, and history lovers to step into the past through her stories—where adventure, mystery, and friendship await!
